Freed, Arthur, author, motion-picture producer; b. Charleston, S.C., Sept. 9, 1894. ASCAP 1924. Educ: Seattle public schools; Exeter Acad., New Hampshire. Became songwriter through association with Gus Ed­wards musical acts, then with former vaudeville partner Louis Silvers wrote musical revues for New York restau­rants. World War I, staged military shows; served as Sgt. 13th Div., AEF. To Seattle after war, wrote "Louisi­ana" and "Cairo." After brief return to vaudeville, became theater manager in Los Angeles, and began producing own musical shows. Wrote songs 1928 for Broadway Melody, screen's first musical production, including "The Wedding of the Painted Doll"; "You Were Meant for Me"; "Broadway Melody." Producer of motion pic­tures.
